At TLC Essex, we are privileged to hear many stories about the difference a small teddy bear can make during difficult moments in a child’s life. Recently, we were contacted by an Essex Freemason who shared a story that truly touched our hearts.
W.Bro Andrew Smith, ProvGStwd, of United Lodge No. 697 in Colchester, got in touch to ask if we could help a very brave young girl called Bonnie-Leigh Spence, who lives in Lancashire. Andrew has known Bonnie’s mother, Zoey, for many years.
Just two days after her fifth birthday in December 2024, Bonnie was rushed to hospital with a large and extremely painful swelling on her arm. After weeks of enduring that pain, she was eventually diagnosed with a rare and terminal cancer. Since then, Bonnie has spent much of the past year in and out of hospital undergoing incredibly difficult treatments.
Her journey has included 24 weeks of chemotherapy, rounds of radiotherapy, multiple surgeries, amputations, and numerous blood transfusions. Despite everything she has faced with remarkable bravery, Bonnie had never received a TLC Teddy during any of her hospital visits.

Knowing how much a teddy could mean, Bonnie’s mum reached out to Andrew to see if we might be able to help, explaining that “Bonnie would absolutely love a TLC Teddy for her bravery during all her treatments.”
Of course, we were only too happy to help.
Just two days later, a yellow teddy — Bonnie’s favourite colour — arrived in the post. She quickly named her new friend Bella, and we were delighted to hear that Bella brought a big smile to Bonnie’s face.
Bonnie truly is a brave little superhero, and we are honoured that a TLC Teddy could bring her a little comfort.
