When W.Bro Mike Rollo stepped back into the Chair of Grey Friars Lodge No. 5169, he knew exactly which cause he wanted to support — and it came straight from the heart.

Two years ago, Mike’s young grandson, Magnus, was admitted to Colchester Hospital with breathing difficulties. During what was understandably a frightening time, a TLC Essex teddy was given to him by hospital staff. That small but powerful gesture left a lasting impression — not just on Magnus, but on Mike too.

Determined to give back, W.Bro Mike made the TLC Essex Appeal his Master’s chosen charity. And with the enthusiastic support of the brethren of Grey Friars Lodge, the results were truly remarkable.

On 22nd September, Big Ted and I had the pleasure of attending the Lodge to present them with a Bronze Patron Certificate, after they raised an outstanding £2,138.44 — far surpassing the Bronze level and just £362 short of achieving Silver Patron status.

The energy in the room was as inspiring as the story. W.Bro Mike initiated his seventh candidate this year in a smooth and heartfelt ceremony, while Bro. Alex Nita shone in his role as Junior Deacon.

The Lodge’s warmth and generosity were unmistakable, and given the strength of their support, I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re back very soon… this time with a Silver Patron certificate in hand.
