In the hustle and bustle of the emergency room, amidst the beeping machines and urgent consultations, there exists a silent hero: the teddy bear.
Abbi Spurdle, a A&E Registered Health Play Specialist at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, attests to the invaluable role of Teddies for Loving Care in providing solace and support to children facing medical emergencies.
“I think Teddies for Loving Care are invaluable. Working with children in A&E I see, first hand, and on a daily basis, the comfort they give to children brought in following an injury or sudden illness.
The nurses, doctors & I also use the teddies to help children understand medical procedures. This can be when they need their chest listened to, their ears looked into, when we need to measure oxygen levels using a saturation probe, as well as using a cannula or taking a blood test or showing them how to use a mask with a nebuliser, as we can use the Teddies to demonstrate this first.
Showing children procedures through medical play is a way for children to understand what is happening while they are in hospital and reduce their stress at a very worrying time for them and their parents/carers."
Every day, Abbi witnesses firsthand the profound impact these teddies have on young patients. Beyond offering immediate comfort following an injury or sudden illness, they serve as powerful tools for medical education and understanding. From demonstrating procedures like using a saturation probe or wearing a nebulizer mask to simply illustrating what happens during a medical examination, these cuddly companions help demystify the hospital environment for children, alleviating their fears and anxieties.
As Abbi highlights, the significance of these teddies extends beyond mere comfort; they play a vital role in pediatric healthcare by fostering a sense of familiarity and understanding. By engaging in medical play with the teddies, children can grasp the complexities of their treatment journey, empowering them to navigate their hospital stay with greater confidence and resilience.
For both medical professionals and caregivers alike, witnessing the calming effect of these teddies on young patients brings reassurance and hope. In the chaotic realm of the emergency room, the simple presence of a teddy bear can make a world of difference, offering a ray of comfort and compassion in times of distress.
